The Master of Science program is designed specifically to prepare students to enter a competitive, scientific workforce. During the two-year course of study, students will gain a strong understanding of both linguistics and language technology. This knowledge will equip them with flexible skills in language technology, such as the ability to build and refine search engines or to work on machine translation and speech recognition software. Students will be required to do an HLT internship under the direction of one of the program's industry affiliates and write a Master's thesis including an actual working implementation.
The HLT program is part of the Department of Linguistics, which offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in linguistics and human language technology. Our faculty has research specializations in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, computational linguistics, psycholinguistics, and language acquisition, as well as diverse interests in a variety of languages. We also offer unique programs In Native American Linguistics. The department trains students for careers in teaching, research, and industry, and is equipped with a variety of laboratory facilities.
