Why should I study linguistics at the University of Arizona?
-The department is ranked 12th in the country, according to the National Research Council (NRC).

Please note the following Admission Requirements for graduate programs in The Department of Linguistics; none of these requirements may be waived:
- Minimum accepted GPA: 3.0
- *GRE exam (University of Arizona GRE code 4832 or Department GRE code 2903)

TOEFL exam: (required for international applicants) Minimum accepted TOEFL scores are 550 (paper-based exam) or 79 (iBT web-based exam).
English proficiency is one of the conditions for admission for all applicants whose native language is not English. Applicants must submit a minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 paper based (PB), 79 internet based (iBT), or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) composite score of 7 (no subject area below a 6).
International students seeking graduate teaching assistantships must obtain the minimum TOEFL or IELTS score listed above, but also a a score of 26 or higher on the speak portion of the TOEFL IBT.

* GRE is recommended but not required for the M.A. in Native American Linguistics (NAMA).
** Three letters of recommendation are required from teachers, professors and/or lecturers who know the student's work, specifically assessing student's ability to carry out graduate work in linguistics. Of the 3 letters of recommendation, 2 letters of recommendation must be from teachers, professors and/or lecturers; one letter of recommendation may be from a past or current employer.
International students who have attended school in the United States: at least 1 letter of recommendation should be from an instructor who teaches at an American institution.
*** Transcripts from all Colleges and Universities attended must be mailed directly to the department of Linguistics:
