Prospective Students

Graduate programs in Linguistics (Ph.D., M.S. & NAMA) application requirements:

•  GPA 3.0
•  GRE exam
   Department gre code: 2903 or University of Arizona gre code: 4832
   *NOTE: the GRE exam is recommended but not required for
   applicants to our Native American Linguistics M.A.
•  TOEFL exam (required for international applicants): minimum
   accepted scores are 550 (paper-based exam); 213 (computer
   based exam); or 79 (iBT web-based exam).

***WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND TAKING THE iBT TOEFL EXAM***
In order to be a Teaching Assistant at the University of Arizona all international students admitted into Linguistics PhD, MS or NAMA programs must receive at least a 26 on the Speak Subtest portion of the Toefl iBT, or take the University of Arizona's T-Best exam and receive a 7.

Additional directions regarding graduate application materials and other required information can be found within the Linguistics Department online application. After opening the Linguistics department online application, applicants will need to establish a user name and password which will allow applicants to revisit and add to the application as often as needed up to the deadline [Domestic application deadline: January 15, 2010; International application deadline: December 1, 2009]. Once Linguistics department online application has been submitted, the application will be closed. PLEASE NOTE: ALL APPLICANTS MUST ALSO SUBMIT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA GRADUATE COLLEGE ONLINE APPLICATION AND PAY FEE. Directions on Graduate College application are below.

•  All applicants to Linguistics graduate programs must also complete
   the University of Arizona's Graduate College online application and
   pay $65 application fee: Apply Now

   We will be unable to review your Linguistics departmental application
   unless the UA Graduate College application is submitted.
•  3 letters of recommendation from people who know the student's
   work, assessing student's ability to do graduate work in linguistics.
•  International students who have attended school in the U.S.: at
   least one letter should be from a teacher at an American institution.
•  Statement of purpose
•  Writing sample
•  Resume
•  Transcripts from all Colleges and Universities attended must be
   mailed directly to the department of Linguistics:
