William Cotter and Mary-Caitlyn Valentinsson, both students in the joint Anthropology and Linguistics PhD program, contributed a piece to Savage Minds - Notes and Queries in Anthropology, a major anthropology blog. The article, titled “A seat at the bar: Issues of race and class in the world of specialty coffee” examines the language of coffee “cuppings”, tasting events that take place within the specialty coffee community. They analyze the discourse of these tasting events in an effort to understand larger race and class based dynamics in the United States that intersect with the specialty coffee industry.
