The primary goal of an internship is to give students an opportunity to apply lessons learned in the classroom to a real-world experience set in a professional practice-oriented environment, with the intern’s work preferably overseen by a professional.
In particular, this internship gives students a practical perspective on problems and applications in Human Language Technology. In addition to offering students the opportunity to demonstrate and develop their technical skills, it allows students to develop professional skills such as teamwork, effective communication, social interaction and professional networking, an understanding of business procedures, leadership, and critical thinking. Finally, it should provide students with work experience within a semi-formal academic framework that carries official course credit from The University of Arizona.
The internship, including the projects completed in the internship and the internship report, serves in place of a master's thesis in the HLT program.

Experiencing an Internship
An internship is at minimum 6 units, representing a minimum of 270 hours of work which is typically 18 to 20 hours per week in Fall or Spring semester. Summer 7-week sessions are also available for doing the internship if needed. Once an internship is found, please send the Internship agreement to your internship advisor and to Joshua Carlin before agreeing to be hired for that internship. Josh will then enroll you for 6, or more, units with the instructor supervising your internship.
