Stanley Donahoo, doctoral candidate in Linguistics (Cognitive Science GIDP minor) recently presented at four conferences abroad.

Stanley co-presented research with fellow cohort-mate Leah Rice at the 5th edition of the Experimental Psycholinguistics Conference in Mahon, Spain. Their research project seeks to clarify aspects of phase theory through experimental methods.

Massumeh Farhad gave the Department of Linguistics' 7th Annual Teleghani Lecture on "When Paintings Speak: The Shahnama of Shah Tahmasp and Its Inscriptions". The lecture each year co-occurs with the awarding of scholarships to support graduate student research at the University of Arizona. This year, the lecture in art history was beautiful and fascinating, the music at the lecture was wonderful, and it was interesting to hear the awardees' descriptions of their research.

Adam Ussishkin is currently carrying out psycholinguistic studies on Maltese at the University of Malta.
Thomas Pace and Manwel Mifsud of the National Maltese Language Council produce a weekly radio show on the Maltese language, and on Saturday, March 18, they interviewed Adam on national radio about his research.

PhD students Jianrong Yu (Linguistics) and William Cotter (Linguistics & Anthropology) recently received fellowships from the Linguistic Society of America to attend the 2017 LSA Summer Institute. This year's Institute is being held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, with Jianrong and William receiving two of the 22 fellowships awarded by the LSA for the upcoming Institute. The University of Arizona was well-represented at the 11th annual Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW in Asia) symposium, held at the National University of Singapore. Alumnus Yosuke Sato, a professor at NUS, co-organized the event, and current and former students and professors presented research results. Professor Noam Chomsky after an informal seminar with faculty members and graduate and prospective students of the Department of Linguistics on February 24, 2017. Professor Chomsky is on an extended visit to the University of Arizona, teaching a 7 week undergraduate course in politics as well as giving a series of talks in the graduate level course offered by the Department of Linguistics titled Biolinguistics.

Using language invention as a way to teach introductory linguistics to University students is catching on. UA Linguistics has long been offering a Tier One general education course in which students invent a language, and as graduate students earn their degrees and move on to jobs at other institutions, they've taken this approach with them.
